The Phoenix Singers are a mixed voice choir performing a variety of choral works. We are based in South Birmingham and rehearse at Rowheath Pavilion Bournville on Wednesday evenings.
Formed in 2001, the choir is currently 85 strong and as well as performing regularly in and around Birmingham, has established an international reputation through a series of European tours.
The choir originally named Chorus 2000 were first formed in January 1996 under John Warren before the present name change in September 2001 to Phoenix Singers when Leon James became Musical Director. Leon moved on after a successful first year and Philip Evans directed the choir from 2001 to 2005 .
The current MD, Matthew Beckingham BMus (Hons), is a graduate of the Birmingham Conservatoire. Matt's varied and interesting career as a conductor, an orchestrator and an educator has involved him with many significant enterprises.
The Phoenix Singers take part in three main charity concerts a year, one at Easter, one in June or July and a "Christmas Cracker Concert" in December. See the Events Diary for more information.
The choir can also be found performing at other events during the year raising money for local charities, benificiaries have been Breast Cancer Treatment in Birmingham hospitals.West Midlands Kidney Appeal, St Marys Hospice and Conductive Education. also church restoration funds and their respective overseas causes.
